Champs
San Jacinto College North of Houston, TX became the first team to win a total of four national championships. The Gators have completely dominated the Junior College sport of baseball the past five years, with four titles and one runner-up finish. Coach Wayne Graham’s team finished with a 5-1 tournament record. (61-10 during the overall season) and gave Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, a 22-4 blistering in the Saturday night finale.
MVP
The JUCO Committee did not have a problem in who to select for MVP, as San Jacinto’s ace, right-hander David Evans won three games. Not only did the 6-3, 182 pound sophomore win key games but he pitched 20 innings, had a 1.80 ERA, was voted the outstanding pitcher, made the all-tourney team and completed his season at 14-1. He won the final game but went only six innings after a pitch hit him in the left leg. The tough Texan was hit on his pitching hand in the third inning but a line drive in the seventh inning proved to be too much, as the ball hit him below the left knee and he was carried from the field (with an 18-1 lead) on a stretcher.
